- Symbol of the 1st World War for the bloody battles which took place on the front between Italy and Austria, mount Col di Lana offers a very interesting hike both from a naturalistic and a historical point of view; suitable for everybody, if in good physical conditions. The ideal starting point is the hamlet of Palla (m. 1676), that can be reached in a few minutes by car from Pieve di Livinallongo. Just before the built-up area there is a small parking area and after 200 metres the forest road which starts this unforgettable itinerary. In the first part, characterized by woods and meadows, it is interesting to notice the flora and fauna; proceeding up the hill, one reaches the top of Ciamplac, where the view is already very wide: Lagazuoi, Tofana di Mezzo, Croda da Lago, Marmolada). The slope of the hill gradually gets steeper and after about two hours and a half one reaches the top of Col di Lana (2462 m), where there are a big wooden cross and a small chapel. From the summit one can see the most important Dolomite peaks and the Austrian mountains. Return is possible along the same way or through alternative trails, of different levels of difficulty, for which it is advisable to collect information beforehand. Along the way one meets tunnels, remains of bays, sections of trenches and memorial tablets reminding of the war and increasing the beauty of the itinerary.
